In Oman and across the Gulf, gold is often quoted in tola, in grams or in ounces. This article explains how they relate so you can compare quotes with confidence.
What is a tola?
A tola is a traditional unit of weight used for gold in South Asia and the Gulf. In the gold trade one tola is 11.664 grams, which is three eighths of a troy ounce.
The conversion rules
To convert tola to grams, multiply by 11.664. To convert grams to tola, divide by 11.664. One troy ounce, the unit used for international gold quotes, is 31.1035 grams.
For example, a 50 g bar is about 4.29 tola, and a 100 g bar is about 8.57 tola.

What to check when a weight is quoted
Ask whether the weight is in grams, tola or ounces, and whether it is the weight of the whole piece or of the gold alone. Ask for the purity, because the same weight at a different karat holds a different amount of pure gold.
